Spring Cup Match Reports

Spring Cup Final 1st Leg

Saturday 5th May 2012
North Ayrshire Wild 7   Dundee Comets 8

Having got the better of Kirkcaldy Kestrels and local rivals Kilmarnock Storm in the group stages of the Spring Cup, North Ayrshire Wild found themselves in the Final against league and Scottish Cup winners, Dundee Comets. The end of season finale was played over two legs with the Auld Lang Sign sponsored Wild at home for the first game.

Comets were first to score with a goal from McNicol at 7.27 but this was followed by a period of first class hockey from the Wild. Alan Maitland got a double at 9.37 and 9.43 followed by another double from Martin Cardno at 12.39 and 12.55 which stung the league winners. Comets pulled themselves back into the game with goals from McPhail (14.02) and James Smith (14.21) to leave Wild with a goal advantage at the end of a blistering first period.

Comets equalised early in the second with a power play goal from Reekie (22.09) but Wild got there noses back in  front at 22.30 when Ian Clark slide one past net minder Michie. Wild`s lead was short lived as another power play goal by Hogan (23.28) and and a second from McPhail (27.21) put Comets in front. The visitors ended the period with a two goal advantage after Johnston netted at 35.30.

Wild pressed Comets hard in the third and it was, Man of the Match, Martin Cardno who got his hat trick on 50.06. Comets came back at Wild with McPhail also getting his hat trick at 54.18 and scoring was rounded of by Skipper Scott Cowan getting a power play goal, Wilds seventh of the night at 56.32.

With only one goal separating the teams all was to play for the following night up at Dundee.

Spring Cup Final 2nd Leg
Sunday 6th May 2012
Dundee Comets 8 North Ayrshire Wild 4 (agg. 16 – 11)

The first period was all about Comets as the Dundee team raced into a four goal lead which started with a power play goal at 2.38 from Hogan. This was followed by goals from James Smith (15.44), Malcolm (16.56) and Johnston (17.35) to leave Wild with an uphill task it they wanted to stop the home team from getting there hat trick of this seasons trophies.

An early goal from Findlay (21.49) put Comets five in front but this inspired Wild to produce another period when they don’t know when to give up. Man of the Match, Alan Maitland again scored a double at 21.56 and 25.31 which was followed by a Scott Cowan goal at 30.38 to silence the Dundee support who though it was all over.

Comets added a sixth though McNicol at 41.55 but Neil Smith kept Wild in the hunt with a strike at 43.36. With time running out for the Ayrshire side, Hogan got a couple of quick goals at 45.27 and 45.42 to seal Comets win and the 2012 Spring Cup .

Dundee Comets have been the team to beat all season and Wild have shown there not far off the pace with Comets only winning by a single goal in a couple of games. A third place in the league, Scottish Cup semi-finalists and Spring Cup runners up are what Wild have achieved this season and have, at times, played some excellent ice hockey.
If the team can find some consistency, next season could be even better.

The team would like to thank all who have helped achieve these results over the season. Especially our sponsors and game helpers at North Ayrshire Ice Hockey Club.
