The second match of the day saw Penguins face off against another far travelled squad as Inverness arrived at Auchenharvie for the final U12 League match of the season.

Despite having had a challenging game earlier in the day, Penguins showed no sign of tiredness as they simply blew their visitors away, romping to an incredible 35-1 victory.

Goals from Jordan Buesa (10), Ben Coughtrie (6), Jamie Miller (5), Callum McGill (4), Lewis Young (3), Darren Easton (2), Robert Benson (2) and single strikes from Finlay Anderson, Ivan Bjorkly and Matthew Miller saw Penguins hit their highest goals tally of the season, with Inverness chalking up a solitary goal to deny netminder Brandon Rooney a clean sheet. It was an outstanding effort from the boys and showed the progress they have made over the course of this season, and demonstrates the potential for bigger and better things next year.

Following the disappointment of defeat in the Scottish Cup Final, North Ayrshire Penguins returned to home ice at Auchenharvie on Saturday for a double header of matches.

First up, the U12′s took on “International” opposition when they faced off against the Junior Belfast Giants who had made their way across the Irish Sea for a Challenge Match.
The game started slowly, with the visitors packing their defence and frustrating Penguins who applied constant pressure. However, at 6.59 Jordan Buesa opened the scoring, the first of an incredible goals tally he would go on to amass over both games. Callum McGill struck at 16.03 to double the advantage however Belfast took advantage of a power play at 18.02, Taylor Beresford netting to make it 2-1. McGill promptly restored the two goal cushion just before the end of the period to see Penguins lead 3-1 at the break.

Penguins came out flying in the second period and Buesa was on blistering form, hitting three goals without reply to extend the lead to 6-1. Jack Oakman pulled one back for the guests but again Penguins responded quickly, Darren Easton scoring just seconds later to make it 7-2. Jamie Miller then helped himself to a quickfire double to extend the lead to 9-2. Miller’s scoring streak was briefly interrupted by Calvin Doherty scoring for Giants, however Miller’s hat-trick was soon complete at 35.31 as he fired home during a power-play opportunity to make the score 10-3. Buesa returned to the ice and notched up another goal, but Belfast again refused to lie down and Beresford claimed his second of the game, making it 11-4. Buesa, however, wasn’t finished yet and claimed another two goals before the end of the period to see Penguins run out comfortable 13-4 victors against their visitors.

Stats:

J Buesa (7+0), J Miller (3+3), C McGill (2+0), D Easton (1+0), J Bray (0+2), R Benson (0+1), W Wallace (0+1), L Young (0+1), S Woods (0+1), M Miller (0+1)

Spring Cup Final 1st Leg

Saturday 5th May 2012

North Ayrshire Wild 7 Dundee Comets 8

Having got the better of Kirkcaldy Kestrels and local rivals Kilmarnock Storm in the group stages of the Spring Cup, North Ayrshire Wild found themselves in the Final against league and Scottish Cup winners, Dundee Comets. The end of season finale was played over two legs with the Auld Lang Sign sponsored Wild at home for the first game.

Comets were first to score with a goal from McNicol at 7.27 but this was followed by a period of first class hockey from the Wild. Alan Maitland got a double at 9.37 and 9.43 followed by another double from Martin Cardno at 12.39 and 12.55 which stung the league winners. Comets pulled themselves back into the game with goals from McPhail (14.02) and James Smith (14.21) to leave Wild with a goal advantage at the end of a blistering first period.

Comets equalised early in the second with a power play goal from Reekie (22.09) but Wild got there noses back in front at 22.30 when Ian Clark slide one past net minder Michie. Wild`s lead was short lived as another power play goal by Hogan (23.28) and and a second from McPhail (27.21) put Comets in front. The visitors ended the period with a two goal advantage after Johnston netted at 35.30.

Wild pressed Comets hard in the third and it was, Man of the Match, Martin Cardno who got his hat trick on 50.06. Comets came back at Wild with McPhail also getting his hat trick at 54.18 and scoring was rounded of by Skipper Scott Cowan getting a power play goal, Wilds seventh of the night at 56.32.

With only one goal separating the teams all was to play for the following night up at Dundee.

Spring Cup Final 2nd Leg

Sunday 6th May 2012

Dundee Comets 8 North Ayrshire Wild 4 (agg. 16 – 11)

The first period was all about Comets as the Dundee team raced into a four goal lead which started with a power play goal at 2.38 from Hogan. This was followed by goals from James Smith (15.44), Malcolm (16.56) and Johnston (17.35) to leave Wild with an uphill task it they wanted to stop the home team from getting there hat trick of this seasons trophies.

An early goal from Findlay (21.49) put Comets five in front but this inspired Wild to produce another period when they don’t know when to give up. Man of the Match, Alan Maitland again scored a double at 21.56 and 25.31 which was followed by a Scott Cowan goal at 30.38 to silence the Dundee support who though it was all over.

Comets added a sixth though McNicol at 41.55 but Neil Smith kept Wild in the hunt with a strike at 43.36. With time running out for the Ayrshire side, Hogan got a couple of quick goals at 45.27 and 45.42 to seal Comets win and the 2012 Spring Cup .

Dundee Comets have been the team to beat all season and Wild have shown there not far off the pace with Comets only winning by a single goal in a couple of games. A third place in the league, Scottish Cup semi-finalists and Spring Cup runners up are what Wild have achieved this season and have, at times, played some excellent ice hockey.
If the team can find some consistency, next season could be even better.

The team would like to thank all who have helped achieve these results over the season. Especially our sponsors and game helpers at North Ayrshire Ice Hockey Club.

North Ayrshire Penguins travelled to Solway Sharks for a U12 League match on Sunday and did the double over their South West rivals with an excellent 10-7 win. Penguins were caught cold when Lewis Chalmers and Aidan Nicol put the home side 2-0 ahead with only a couple of minutes on the clock but, roared on by a healthy travelling support, the visitors came storming back and by 10.59 man of the match Ivan Bjorkly had netted a quick-fire hat trick give his side a 3-2 lead.

Further goals at 11.29 from captain Jordan Buesa and 14.57 from Lewis Young opened up a 5-2 advantage, however Solway simply refused to lie down and strikes from Chalmers and Liam Stenton saw a terrific first period come to an end with the visitors holding a very slender 5-4 lead.

The second period continued at the same furious pace and at 21.08 Penguins moved 6-4 ahead with a long-range Darren Easton effort however, just five seconds later, Nicol scored his second of the game to pull Solway back to one goal down.

It was end-to-end stuff and, as both sides created chances galore, netminders Rebekkah Scott for Sharks and Brandon Rooney were forced to make some excellent saves.
It looked ominous for Penguins when they drew a two minute penalty, giving Sharks a power-play, but at 24.37 Bueasa netted a short-handed goal to put them 7-5 up and the three-goal lead was restored on 27 minutes when Calum McGill netted after a terrific passing move.

A dogged Solway side reduced the deficit to 8-6, Lewis Houston scrambling the puck home despite Penguins’ protests that Rooney had been impeded, but the Stevenston outfit raced straight up the ice from the face off and Bjorkly scored his fourth of the game to give his side a 9-6 lead.
Bjorkly then celebrated his call up to the Scotland U11 team by netting his fifth and Penguins’ tenth to put the game beyond reach on 35.39 and although Houston pulled one back for Sharks at 39.03 the two points were heading for Ayrshire

Penguins scorers and assists. I. Bjorkly (5+2); J. Buesa (2+2); D. Easton (1+2); C. McGill (1+1); L. Young (1+0); M. Miller (0+1).

MoM. Ivan Bjorkly.

North Ayrshire Ice Hockey Club’s growing stature has been recognised again with the selection of nine-year old Ivan Bjorkly-Nordstrom for the Scotland U11 team which competes in a tournament in Hull in May.

Ivan started his hockey career in Sweden in a learn-to-play set up with Tyreso Hockey Club outside Stockholm, and on his return to Scotland quickly settled in at NAIHC’s Learn to Play programme with The Ducks.

Once there Ivan soon developed under the watchful eye of Junior Development Coach Stevie Young and a squad of talented on-ice helpers such as James Wallace and his sister Ruth, and now he has joined the growing ranks of players at NAIHC who have been selected for Scottish or British squads.

After a period with the Ducks Ivan moved up to U10 level with The Sabres and was then given the chance to train up with the U12s Penguins squad, making his debut at that level at the age of just eight. He scored on his league debut game and went on to collect the Player of the Year and Top Goal Scorer awards last season and is now a regular for both sides.

Besides ice hockey, Ivan also squeezes in training with Glasgow Swimming Club and field hockey for Kelburne. He is the first to acknowledge and recognise the positive impact that all those involved in his coaching and development have had and is looking forward to going to Hull to represent both club and country, although he fully recognises that the opposition and the standard of play will be exceptionally high. But, as Ivan said: “Scotland U11s are a good team with great team spirit and we fear no-one!”
